This could be used as an example of how lions do not want an attack to turn out! This lioness has ended up in all sorts of trouble after she tries to bring down a buffalo. In the below clip, we get to see just how many risks a lion has to take to bring down a buffalo!
What Do Lions Normally Eat?
Lions are apex predators and accomplished hunters. As large carnivores, they need a lot of animal protein to keep them healthy and happy. Also, they are generalist hunters and have been seen tackling a wide variety of prey.
African lions feed mainly on medium to large-sized ungulates so this can include zebra, buffalo and gazelle. They have also been seen hunting domestic livestock, brown fur seals (on the Namibian coast), birds, fish, reptiles and insects. In India, they frequently catch chital deer supplemented by the occasional sambar (a type of deer) and nilgai (a type of antelope).
Some prides rely mostly on hunting their own food. As you see here, several of them hunt together and the kill will be enough to feed them all. They may only need one large kill a week and will supplement this with smaller prey. Other prides are experts at scavenging and pinch food that other animals have caught. There are reports of lions taking food from several other species including cheetahs and wild dogs. They locate the kill by watching vultures or listening out for the sound of hyenas squabbling over a carcass.
Is This Normal Behavior for a Lion Pride?
It is normal for female lions to hunt as a group. They would prefer to target a lone buffalo as a whole herd presents a risk of injury to the lions. Even so, we can see here that a lone buffalo could cause a lion a serious injury. It is common for a larger and heavier female to take the lead. A lion will try to jump on the back of a buffalo thereby keeping away from the horns! The lioness is trying to land a few killer bites.
However, buffalos are no pushover! If you look carefully, you can see that it is the buffalo that charges at the lioness and not the other way around. She is tossed in the air and is lucky that she is not more seriously hurt!
