Foxes don’t typically hunt house cats — they’re worthy opponents, especially when full-grown. However, a fox might hunt a small house cat if it considers it small enough to be prey. In this clip, you watch as a domesticated house cat interacts with a fox that has entered its territory.
Domesticated cats can be cute and cuddly, purring their way to their owners’ hearts but that doesn’t mean they aren’t capable of tearing through flesh with their claws, teeth, and papillae-ridden tongues. When the video starts, there’s a grey cat in the center. It has a plate of food and is in an enclosed backyard.
There are some sheds in the background, and you can see the fence that identifies the property lines of the home. Already, the cat has spotted something. It moves slowly and intentionally, keeping its eyes on something to the left of the screen. Its back is arched, signaling fear, but it moves into a defensive pose.
You can hear traffic in the background as the cat’s gaze follows something of interest. You don’t see what the cat sees until about 40 seconds in, when the fox appears from the left, trotting along the grass close to the fence. It keeps a safe distance from the cat.
It sniffs about and walks closer. When they face each other, the fox walks in the opposite direction. It obviously doesn’t want a fight. It just wants some food. The house cat is focused, watching the intruder as it approaches its food plate. It starts hissing and then a game of cat and mouse ensues.
The cat chases the fox in a circle around the yard and stops. Then, the fox comes back and starts eating the cat’s food. The cat approaches (and does the always comical but equally dangerous wiggle butt move before pouncing), and chases after the fox. For several seconds, the cat is out of the camera’s view as the fox keeps sniffing around the yard.
The fox is hungry, it’s found some food, and returns to the plate. Suddenly, the cat approaches, slowly and intimidatingly. The fox knows the cat is not an animal to mess with. When it spots the cat again, it runs away. Luckily, in this encounter, the fox didn’t see the cat as prey. All it wanted was a bit of what the cat was eating. Although the cat was protective, the fox still managed to get a few bites of the territorial cat’s food.
